Ellen Hopkins    


Was born in Long Beach, California, adopted by an older couple and later moved to Palm Springs, CA then Santa Barbara, CA. She had her children in her 20s and navigated a difficult relationship, with the father of her third child. She has been writing since she was a young girl, and started to write for pay at 38 years old.  She is the author of twenty nonfiction titles, three novels for adults including New York Times bestselling thirteen young adult in-verse novels. Jason Reynolds   

Was born in Washington, DC and raised in neighboring Oxon Hill, Maryland. As a child he found inspiration in rap and started writing poetry at nine years old. He focused on poetry for approximately the next two decades, only reading a novel cover to cover for the first time at age 17 and publishing several poetry collections before he published his own first novel in 2014. He is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and has published sixteen books. Mahogany L. Browne


Is the Executive Director of JustMedia, a media literacy initiative designed to support the groundwork of criminal justice leaders and community members. She is the author of four books and founder diverse lit initiative, Woke Baby Book Fair. She has a poetry collection in the works, Remember Death By Its Proximity to What I Love is a book-length poem responding to the impact of mass incarceration on women and children). Amber McBride 

Was born in Germany spending the first 18 years of her life in different states. She moved to Charlottesville in 2018. She is a poet and her poetry has been published in various literary magazines including The Cincinatti Review, The Rumpus, ProvinceTown Arts and others.  Is currently a professor of English at the University of Virginia. She holds an MFA in poetry from Emerson College and . She lives in Virginia with her dog and Me  (Moth) was her debut YA novel.  

Jasmin Kaur

Lives in Vancouver, BC. A spoken word artist, poet and a fourth-grade teacher and in the last five years has  lead creative writing workshops for young people in North America, the UK, and Australia. (Jasmin Kaur, nd)

Elizabeth Acevedo


Was born and and raised in New York City and of Dominican descent.  Acevedo is a National Poetry Slam Champion and a New York Times bestselling author. Her works have themes of race, gender, and equality.  She currently lives in Washington, DC with her husband.
